Want the best fruit & veg at the best prices? Head to a market in Tuscany.

Great quality fruit and vegetables, most grown locally in Castellina in Chianti, near our agriturismo in Chianti, Podere Patrignone www.patrignone.com

There are dozens of produce markets in Tuscany every day of the week. No matter where you are staying, there will be a daily market somewhere near you. And while the quality of the fruit and vegetables sold in the supermarket here is really excellent (far better than most of the tasteless hot-house produce you are probably used to buying back home – look good, but tasteless, right?), and often sourced locally, the really good stuff is always found at the daily markets.

I took these snaps in Castellina in Chianti, where we go most Saturday mornings to top up our supplies, but we’re also fans of the market in Poggibonsi on Tuesdays, where there are several farmers who sell their own produce, much of it organic. These guys get up at 3 in the morning almost every day, so that they’re ready for business first thing. They’re fruit and veg heros, every last one of them.

Remember the markets are nearly always morning only, so they all start to pack up around 12.30 pm. Don’t be late.

We tell guests staying here at Podere Patrignone in one of our holiday villa rentals where to find our favourite stalls selling cheese, salami, sausages, fresh fish, and rotisserie chicken – yum! But honestly, it’s hard to go wrong at these markets. Poor quality produce is shunned by the locals, and your reputation is everything.
