Plan the perfect trip to Italy | Part 1
A trip to Italy can be fairly cheap, especially if you live in the UK and buy your flights early. But if you’re crossing at least one major ocean to get here, it’s likely your flight alone will have cost you a few quid. Add car hire, accommodation, restaurants, leather & wine purchases, and gelato, and you budget per person isn’t likely to dip much below US$3000 per person for a 2-week break. That’s over $200 a day.
That’s why it’s so sad when I see 2-week itineraries that include 5 or more separate stops. I get it: it’s costing you a lot to come here, and you want to see as much as possible; get “the most” out of your trip.
But the problem is, the distances and travel times are always bigger than you think, and every significant move means packing your bags, checking out, several hours travel, stress when you can’t find your digs, checking in, long shower, nap (because you’re exhausted)…and there goes a whole day of your trip.
So, unless you have your very own time machine, my rule of thumb is: don’t waste more than 15% of your precious holiday travelling. So in a 14-day trip, that’s 3 hops at the very most, ideally 2 or less. That means 4 nights in every place, which, after all, is only 3 full days. Any more than that, and it’ll all be a blur; you’ll go home more exhausted then when you left..
Remember: if you enjoy your trip, give yourself time to relax and soak up the magic of Italy (instead of spending your entire time taking selfies that you’ll never see in front of landmarks you’ll never remember), you will go home happy, with lots of stories, rich with memories and experiences, hatching plans for your next trip back while you’re still on the plane.
